Essay On Poverty In India In 200 Words

Poverty means not having enough money for basic needs such as food, drinking water, shelter, or toilets. Many people in different countries live in poverty, especially in developing areas of Africa, Latin America and some parts Asia.

Poverty is caused by illiteracy.

There are different ways to measure poverty. The World Bank says that extreme poverty is when someone has less than US$1 a day to live on (that dollar is an ideal one). It has been changed to rule out certain effects such as inflation, meaning that prices of things rise higher than what a person is paid, and other price level differences. Moderate poverty is when people have to live on less than $2 a day. In the year 2001, 1.1 billion people were seen as extremely poor, and 2.7 billion were seen as moderately poor.

In the developed world this does not apply. There, many people are seen as the working poor. They have a job, but do not earn enough money for basic things such as food and a home. In most developed countries, people without jobs receive money from the government, but this is often less than they need for a comfortable life.

There are different ways to tell if a country is rich or poor. The Gross Domestic Product, or GDP, and Human Development Index, or HDI, are two of those measures. Gross Domestic Product is the money made from trade from inside the country.

HDI, meaning the Human Development Index is a different matter. It is determined by life expectancy and adult literacy rates. Places in Africa like Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone are the poorest, with Sierra Leone having the lowest HDI ranking in the world.

Poverty is a hurdle in the way of a country's progress. One way of helping lower poverty is by educating poor people, so that they can start contributing to a nation's economic development. Education teaches the poor about their rights and may show them the path to become an important part in growth and expansion of the country. Vienna Declaration also tells this fact.

One of the most important things that is needed to make a country richer is for the Government to want to help poor people do better. Without this it is hard for people to become better off.

Introduction

Poverty is one the major problems faced by India. Along with Poverty, there are other major problems faced by India, such as Corruption, Black money, huge population, Illiteracy and many other. These problems are somehow correlated with each other. The rapidly rising population causes lack of education and job opportunities, which results in poverty.

Poverty can be defined as the situation where people are deprived of the basic human needs like food, clothes and shelter. They cannot afford the things which are necessary for the survival. Poverty in India has its roots in history. In the ancient times in India, people categorised based on the work they do and hence ultimately based on how much they earn. As the time passed the valley between the rich and poor also increased. Poverty can be seen more in developing countries like India, where the economy is not enough strong. The poverty in India is determined by the “Poverty Line” which is a very disputed measure to determine the poverty.

India is on of the poorest countries in the world as well as the number of rich people in India is also huge. In 2015, almost 170 million people(12.4%)were below the poverty line. Poor people in India cannot get their basic needs like food, water, shelter, clothes fulfilled.

Reasons/Causes of Poverty in India

India is a developing country and poverty is one of the major problems faced by India. There are many reasons behind the poverty in India.

British Colonial Rule

British ruled India for almost 200 years. They looted our gold, money and everything and that kind of started the extreme poverty seen in India.

Huge Population

India ranks 2nd in the world population. Approximately 1.25 billion people live in India and it is a very difficult challenge for the government to provide all the necessary facilities to that amount of people. With huge population per capita income also reduces, hence causing the poverty.

Unemployment

With the rapidly rising population, the job opportunities cannot keep up with the population. There are not enough jobs for all. No jobs hence no money.

Lack of Education/ Motivation

Illiteracy is also one of the major problems in India. Lack of education results into not having enough qualification to do a job. The lack of personal motivation is also a reason behind the poverty in India. Individuals do not have enough willpower to do hard work and earn money.

Geographical Factors

Natural calamities like droughts, excess rain, floods damage the agricultural production to a very high extent and it results in higher prices of food items. Poor people cannot afford the things with increased price.

Ways to Stop/Reduce Poverty in India

Although poverty is a huge problem and it cannot be stopped in short amount of time, but with some changes and the steps we can reduce the poverty in India. Since 1950s Indian Government and non-government bodies have taken many steps to reduce the poverty and they have succeeded. Following are the ways we stop poverty in India.

Population Control

As the rising population is the major reason behind the poverty, controlling the population can change the scenario and help India to reduce and stop the poverty in India.

Employment and Education for Poor

Providing education to poor people will help them to be qualified to get a job. Providing jobs to poor people will help them to improve their financial situation.

Skill Training

Training poor people skills that will help them to earn money is a way to reduce the poverty in India.

Making Agriculture Profitable

Agriculture the main source of food in any country. In India, agriculture is one of the main sources of employment for people in India. Making the agriculture sector profitable will lower the prices of food items hence making them affordable to the poor people.

Conclusion

Although poverty is the major problem faced by India the scenario is changing. The standard of living is improving with coming years. That day isn’t far when India will escape from the chains of poverty.

Tips for Speech

  1. Never mug up the speech script as it is. That sounds like a robot, your audience will not connect with it.
  2. Rather than reciting the complete script, note down only important bullet points and speak from your heart. When you speak from the heart you might fumble once or twice but it connects with your audience. We are humans after all we all make mistakes.
  3. Rather than words focus more on the emotions behind the word.
  4. If you are confident enough try to be interactive with your listeners. Ask them questions.
  5. If you are a parent don’t force kids to mug it up. Help them to understand the topics and it’s important. In real life, you just can’t survive with mugged up answers, isn’t it? Today’s generation is 10 times smarter than our generation they can easily understand the topic.
  6. If you are speaking in public for the first time then you better try a speech in front of parents, siblings or friends. Ask them feedback and revisit the script. Or else at least try speech in front of the mirror.

Tips for Essay

  1. You can write an essay in story format too, take an imaginary person and tell a story on given topic from his/her perspective.
  2. Essay generally have three main parts, Introduction, impact or more detailed info and then summary or conclusion. Don’t use headers in the essay. But you should divide the essay into these 3 logical sections.
  3. Try to maintain a flow between sections. Carry forward a point from the last paragraph and then take it forward.
  4. You can start a new paragraph with words or phrases like “on another hand, plus, at first, however”.
  5. It is important to have a conclusion or summary for an essay. You don’t need to be positive all the time for conclusion, it can be a mix of both emotions. Try to have an inspiring, positive, euphoric conclusion.

Tips for Paragraph Writing

  1. Generally, you will have 2 section in paragraph writing, it will be shorter than an essay.
  2. Paragraph are generally facts based rather than interactive or story based.
  3. You can have headings for paragraph if allowed.
